Golf on the Costa del Sol

Many of the courses are located in and around the big towns and cities such as Nerja, Marbella and Málaga. But even the smaller towns and villages have plenty of courses for you to take on – with prices ranging from around EUR 40–50 to hundreds. The most expensive – and the most exclusive – of them all is probably the Valderrama championship course in Sotogrande, Cádiz.

If you are looking for an absolutely crazy round of golf instead, then the Monte Mayor course could be more to your liking. It is a challenging course that visitors soon come to love or hate. The holes have been designed to incorporate the dramatic Spanish countryside and feature obstacles including steep ravines and babbling brooks. You are sure to have a golf experience with a difference, but forget about looking for your ball after a severe slice ...

In addition to these two unique examples, there are naturally all kinds of fine courses at reasonable prices all along the coast. If you are in the Marbella area, for example, we warmly recommend Los Naranjos and Marbella Golf Club.

Guidance for golf players in Spain

• Book in advance. Many of the courses regularly host competitions, so it can be difficult to book tee times at short notice. Book well in advance and take your booking confirmation with you.

• If possible, avoid playing during the middle of the day in summer, as it can be very hot.

• Always make sure to take plenty of water with you on the course. It is also a good idea to put an ice pack in with the water bottles in your bag.

• Use sunscreen!

• Many of the courses are quite hilly, so it may be a good idea to hire a golf buggy.

• Don't be afraid to ask for hints and advice from the locals, or your new golfing friends. Many of them can direct you to little golfing gems that most tourists are unaware of.
